Stand Up for the Burrup actions took place in London (pictured) and Amsterdam yesterday outside Shell Headquarters in both cities. Protests across the world have highlighted the ongoing destruction of rock art comprising thousands of sacred images and ceremonial sites, and dated as thousands of years old.

New Government for Australia - On the 24 November Australians went to the polls and overwhelmingly voted in a Labor government. The new PM-elect Kevin Rudd has committed to an apology for the Stolen Generations, a review of the NT intervention, a fresh approach to practical reconciliation, and to closing the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. He is also expected to sign the Kyoto protocol.

The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples - After more than 20 years of negotiations the UN General Assembly has adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The declaration was carried by a large majority with four notable exceptions, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA. The Declaration affirms the rights of Indigenous peoples in relation to self determination, freedom from discrimination, and the right to consultation on matters concerning their customs, language, land and resources."Today's decision is a milestone for the worlds' Indigenous peoples ... and reaffirms that Indigenous individuals are entitled to all human rights recognised in international law without discrimination" stated Tom Calma, social justice commissioner ( pictured),

Northern Territory Intervention is well underway by the (previous) Federal Government in Australia sparking opposition from many communities. Key concerns have included the quarantining of welfare payments for all Aboriginal people living on the designated communities, the seizure of community assets and the abolition of the permit system.
