STOLEN GENERATIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~
Rabbit-Proof Fence, which opens in the UK in November and the USA in December, and is currently showing in Europe, is the first major film to dramatise the 'Stolen Generations'.
Aboriginal children were taken from their parents, institutionalised and trained for low grade domestic and farming work. This was the government's assimilationist, some say genocidal, policy for much of the twentieth century.
The Australian government has refused to apologise for this policy and Labor has stopped pursuing them.
The Guardian reports on the furore the film has generated
ACTION
~~~~~~~~~~~
The campaign for the return of 'Stolen Wages' continues.
From 1904 to 1987, the Queensland Government withheld or underpaid wages earned by Aboriginal workers. Aboriginal stockmen and domestic workers were the underpaid backbone of the pastoral industry for much of the 20th Century.
The State Government has offered a settlement but it represents only a fraction of what was stolen Indigenous people regard it as "insulting" and "blackmail". ENIAR is supporting this campaign and your assistance would be greatly appreciated » http://www.eniar.org/action/stolen.html
