Oscar hopes dashed for 'ten canoes'

17 January 2007 - Australia's first Aboriginal-language film, Ten Canoes, has missed out on a chance at an Oscar nomination for best foreign film.

Nine films have advanced to the final voting phase, including veteran Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's Volver.

Mexian film-maker Guillermo Del Toro's fantasy, Pan's Labyrinth, and The Lives of Others, about spying in eastern Germany, are also on the shortlist.

The final five, which started out in a field of 61 submissions, will be unveiled along with contenders in all the categories on January 23.

The winners will be announced February 25 during the 79th annual Academy Awards.

The other films on the shortlist are Algeria's Days of Glory, Canada's Water, Denmark's After the Wedding,

France's Avenue Montaigne, the Netherlands' Black Book, and Switzerland's Vitus.

The rules for the category changed this year.

Instead of several hundred members of the foreign-language film committee selecting the five nominees, this year - during what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences calls Phase I - their ballots selected nine finalists for nomination.

A Phase II committee of 30, comprised of 10 randomly-selected members of the larger group and two 10-member contingents from New York and Los Angeles, will choose the final five nominees.
