Matt Rigney- Greens SA candidate for the Federal seat of Barkerves

October 2001 - I am a family man concerned about the preservation of the family as an essential nurturing unit that requires our protection and support.

As a Ngarrindjeri man, I am interested in the interconnection between how we treat the earth and how we treat each other. It is inherent in my very existence and identity as a Ngarrindjeri man that the protection of country and society go hand in hand.

I am adamant that the unequal distribution of wealth in Australia must be addressed by our parliament, and it is my view that the only party that will implement policies to facilitate an economy that has a social conscience is the Australian Greens.

We must challenge those who would use and abuse our finite resources for personal gain and find ways of legislating against such unsustainable economic practices. Caring for country is an essential part of my peoples connection to country. This connection is identified through our Dreaming and spiritual beliefs which have been around for many thousands of years.

As an Elder, I am entrusted to ensure that the earth and its people are respected and cared for by all. We must challenge those who want to pollute our country through the dumping of nuclear waste which can not, with any certainty, be safe and secure from harming our lands, waterways and peoples.
