Policeman admits lying during Hurley investigation

13 October 2008 - A policeman at the trial of alleged Palm Island rioter Lex Wotton has admitted he lied during an investigation involving Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley.

Several months before the death in custody of Mulrunji Doomadgee on Palm Island in November 2004, Detective Sergeant Darryn Robinson investigated allegations that his friend, Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley, ran over a woman's foot in a police car.

Barbara Pilot suffered a compound fracture and was taken to hospital.

Senior Sergeant Hurley was acquitted last year over Mulrunji Doomadgee's death in custody.

At today's trial, Detective Sergeant Robinson was asked whether he lied at the time when he wrote in a report that two witnesses were unidentifiable, even though their names were on a police log sheet.

    He replied "yes".

Detective Sergeant Robinson later became one of the officers investigating Sergeant Hurley over the Palm Island death.
