Iratiwanti Campaign gains support (throughout the world)

22 October 2003 - The anti-nuclear waste dump campaign, launched by a group of senior women from Cooper Pedy in South Australia, is gaining support throughtout the world.

The Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta ( Cooper Pedy women Elders) recently held a bush camp to discuss tactics to prevent the Federal Governments nuclear wast dump being built in their region. The camp attracted more than 200 people from around Australia who listened to the women tell their stories of surviving the British nuclear tests at Emu Field and Marilinga 50 years ago and why they don’t want the waste dump in their country.

The women have received support from anti-nuclear campaigners in othe countries including Japan, Sweden, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Spokeswoman Eileen Kampakuta Brown told the Koori Mail that their Kulini Kulini ( Are you listening?) campaign was growing stronger every day and that she hoped the Federal Government would soon listen.

‘We don’t want the poison’ she said. ‘It’s time the Government listened to our message".
