PM's history plan ignores Indigenous massacre, Minister says

12 October 2007 - Northern Territory Education Minister Paul Henderson says events such as the 1928 Coniston massacre would be trivialised under the Prime Minister's new history teaching plan.

Other events reportedly not included in the PM's guide to teaching history include the Eureka rebellion, British atomic tests at Maralinga, and Cyclone Tracy.

John Howard says his Australian history program will be supported by all states and territories.

Under the plan years nine and 10 students will receive 150 hours of core Australian history covering topics from early Aboriginal history to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

But Mr Henderson says he is worried significant Indigenous history will be skipped, such as the Coniston massacre in central Australia where dozens of Aboriginal people are believed to have been murdered.

"If there's one chapter that the Territory should write in regards to a national curriculum on history it should be the Indigenous History."

The Commonwealth says states and territories will be allowed to include any locally significant event in the curriculum.
