ENIAR | Doris Pilkington Garimara Lecture: Monday November 4th

ENIAR special update | October 2002

This is a special events update from the European Network for Indigenous Australian Rights (ENIAR). Our news update will follow in a couple of weeks.

    EVENTS UPDATE
The Institute of Archaeology (UCL) in conjunction with ENIAR will be hosting a public lecture with Doris Pilkington Garimara followed by a reception on:

    Monday November 4th, 6.30-7.30pm
    @ G6 Lecture Theatre
    Institute of Archaeology
    University College London
31-34 Gordon Sq, WC1H OPY (nearest Underground: Euston or Euston Square)

Doris Pilkington Garimara, is the author of 'Follow The Rabbit Proof Fence' on which the new movie Rabbit-Proof Fence is based.

Rabbit-Proof Fence is the true story of three Australian Aboriginal girls forcibly taken from their family during a government programme in the first half of the twentieth century to be trained as domestic workers and integrated into white society. They are part of what is known as the 'Stolen Generations'.

Opening in the UK November 8 (USA in December), starring Kenneth Branagh and David Gulpilil and directed by big shot Hollywood Director Philip Noyce, Rabbit-Proof Fence is the first major movie to bring the story of the
'Stolen Generations' to the big screen. The Oscar buzz has started - it has received the most nominations for the AFI Awards (the 'Australian Oscars') and it is part of a new wave of Aboriginal-themed movies.
