Work starts on Burrup LNG plant

8 January 2007 - Work will begin today on Woodside Energy's Pluto liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on the Burrup Peninsula in north-west Western Australia.

The plant will be located near the existing gas plant that Woodside partly owns and operates for the North-West Shelf Venture.

There has been opposition to its location because the company will have to move 150 ancient Aboriginal rock engravings to make way for the development.

A Woodside spokeswoman says no rock art will be moved today as contractor BGC starts preliminary siteworks to make way for LNG storage tanks.

The plant is due to be operational by 2010.
