Brown urges govts to save rock art

15 July 2006 - The Greens are calling on the federal and Western Australian governments to help save ancient Aboriginal rock art on the state's Burrup Peninsula.

Greens leader Bob Brown says the development of gas processing factories are threatening almost a million separate art works.

Senator Brown says the Commonwealth should intervene to protect the entire area in north-west Western Australia, rather than the 60 per cent promised by the State Government.

Senator Brown visited the peninsula earlier this week and says he was shocked by what he saw.
"I saw bulldozers at work on a road widening there that's just recently destroyed magnificent art sites and standing stones," he said.

He is urging the Western Australian Government to consider using other sites located nearby.
"There's alternative sites for industrial development but there's no alternative to this rock art, which should be the pride of our nation, not a place for bulldozers," he said.

Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell will make a decision on the national heritage listing of the Burrup Peninsula within the next few months.
