1 October 2007 - A bid has been launched for Canberra's Aboriginal Tent Embassy to be added to the National Heritage list.

To qualify places need to be living records of Australian history, have outstanding natural beauty or reflect Indigenous values.

Visiting history fellow at the Australian National University, Gordon Briscoe, says the Tent Embassy meets the criteria.

"I think it's one of the most significant Indigenous protest sites on important national questions such as the question of land rights," he said.

The Embassy will now be assessed by the Australian Heritage Council.

Nominations for the National and Commonwealth Heritage Lists are open for public comment until December 21.
