key indigenous australian issues
| home | news lRabbit Proof Fence tops AFI list18 Rabbit Proof Fence, by acclaimed Australian director Phillip Noyce, has scooped the pool with ten nominations. The historical drama recounts the true story of a young Aboriginal girl who leads her younger sister and cousin in an escape from a government institution. It had been set up as part of a policy to train indigenous children as domestic workers to integrate them into white society. Meanwhile, Walking on Water, a modest tale about the effects of euthanasia on a group of contemporary Australians, directed by short film and documentary maker Tony Ayres, scored nine nominations. Four films - Australian Rules, Beneath Clouds, Rabbit Proof Fence and The Tracker - all examining indigenous culture, have been nominated in the Best Film category out of the 14 feature films entered this year. AFI Awards director Rebecca Peniston-Bird said the distinctly Australian flavour of this years' film entries was great encouragement for the local industry. "Last year the biggest films, Lantana and Moulin Rouge, could be classed as international films in terms of their subject matter and story-telling," she said. "This year we have an extreme contrast, with the number of indigenous stories and unmistakably Australian themes dominating. "It is exciting to see Australian filmmakers telling their own stories with confidence and clarity." She said it had also been a productive and creative year in Australian television drama, where new productions had won appreciative audiences and long-running favourites remained popular. The 2002 AFI Awards ceremony will be held on December 7 at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne and broadcast on Network 10 nationally.
