Territory elders to lead WYD youth

9 July 2008 - Aboriginal elders will chaperone young Territorians welcoming the Pope to Australia.

One of the organisers of World Youth Day says Aboriginal elders from the Northern Territory will be among the first people to welcome the Pope to Sydney.

Benita De Vincentils is the World Youth Day organiser for the Territory.

She says about 200,000 young people are expected to flood into Sydney for the event and Aboriginal elders, chaperoning young Territorians, have been asked to play a big role.

"There will be an Indigenous guard of honour and twenty of our elders will be a part of that, with elders from Aboriginal communities right around Australia."
