| home | news lTalk by Tom Calma Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice CommissionerMr Tom Calma is the current Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner at the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission (HREOC). The position was created in 1992 in response to the social and economic disadvantage facing Indigenous Australians, and specifically in response to the findings of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and the National Inquiry into Racist Violence.
The Commissioner's role includes reviewing the impact of laws and policieson Indigenous peoples, reporting on Indigenous social justice and native title issues and promoting an Indigenous perspective on issues. The Commissioner also monitors the enjoyment and exercise of human rights for Indigenous Australians. The HREOC Act and the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) require that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner produces an annual Social Justice and a Native Title Report, which are tabled in Parliament. The Commissioner will be talking on the current issues in Indigenous Affairs, the post-apology situation in Australia, and the findings of the latest Social Justice Report.We hope to see as many people as possible there.
