| home | news lThe Australian Indigenous Band 'Kross Kulcha' is playing in St Petersburg on 22-25 April 2004Young Kimberley band Kross Kulcha has been invited to play at the SKIF-8 in St Petersburg Russia this year, after performing at the Perth International Festivals Indigenous Showcase in 2003. The Sergey Kuryokhin International Festival will take place in Theatre Baltijsky Dom on April 22-25, 2004. The Sergey Kuryokhin Charity Foundation, a non-profit organisation, has held seven previous events since 1997, the first two being in New York, while the subsequent festivals have been in Sergey Kuryokins home city. Sergey Kuryokhin was a renowned Russian composer, musician and performer, influential in jazz, rock and new music, until his untimely death in 1996. The City of St Petersburg, foreign embassies and cultural organisations worldwide support the Foundation and Festival in his memory. SKIF aspires to maintain an open field by drawing upon and challenging the accepted notions of jazz, rock, classical, ethnic and world styles. Participation by Kross Kulcha at this festival is unique by indigenous Australians in the grand city of St Petersburg and will give impetus to the improving cultural relations between Russia and Australia. Top selling German producer Zeus B Held wants to meet with the band in Europe to discuss a synergy with his recording label.
Kross Kulcha consists of Justin Gray on vocals and lead guitar; Aaron Hodges on rhythm guitar; Garth Ranger on bass and backing vocals and Jamie Gray on drums. Their influences are metal and new punk, while their lyrics reflect life growing up in the Kimberley, the uncertain world for youth today, suicide and love. This dynamic group began playing together as school friends in Derby, and now, after two years of college music studies, are taking on the world. These years of tuition, industry knowledge and studio experience have helped them to fine-tune their already strong and rocking sound. Kross Kulcha have toured throughout most of Western Australia, have appeared live in the studio nationally on ABC TV, and have performed at the Perth International Arts Festival 2003. They played open air at Survival Concert 2004 in Perth to tens of thousands, and have produced their own album of originals on CD "Sound of Silence". New originals from Justin Gray mainly, are being performed now as they continue to write songs to be gathered on their next recording. An invitation from top selling German producer Zeus B Held to discuss a synergy and collaboration with Kross Kulcha has come as a result of their invitation to play at SKIF-8 festival in St Petersburg, Russia this April. The world calls these talented young players. Source: Australian Embassy, Moscow related links :
