Constitution

Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians are seeking changes to the 1901 Australian Constitution. They want removal of discriminatory clauses and  recognition of prior occupation and continuing cultures, language and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as protection against future discrimination.

A referendum on Constitutional reform was to be held in 2013 but has been put on hold  to give more time to build public support. An Act of Recognition was adopted by the House of Representatives on 13 Feb 2013 as an interim step to a referendum and constitutional change. www.reconciliation.org.au
